Methodology - Training Within Industry

TWI has helped companies sustain the gains from their lean initiatives to create a true continuous improvement culture. The TWI program provides supervisors and team leaders with essential skills that allows them to accept responsibility for improvement, communicate effectively, develop teams to involve their people, delegate responsibility and train others. In turn production associates will accept responsibility for their work, participate in the improvement process, learn how to interact as part of a team and experience increased levels of job satisfaction.

TWI consists of three core programs modules that feature a proven four-step methodology of Preparation, Presentation, Application and Testing. This methodology ensures that each program is simple, straight-forward and easy to implement. Participants are given the opportunity to practice the four-step method and "learn by doing" in a confidential, low-stress, and supportive environment.

The three core program modules:

  • Job Instruction (The Role of Teacher)
  • Job Methods (The Role of Problem Solver)
  • Job Relations (The Role of Coach)

Job Instruction (The Role of Teacher) – the purpose of the Job Instruction (JI) module is to train any persons within the organization that train, coach or lead other people to teach those people how to quickly learn to do a job correctly, safely, and conscientiously. The phrase most often associated with Job Instruction is “if the worker hasn’t learned then the instructor hasn’t taught”. Results obtained from Job Instruction (JI) training are:

  • Reduced training time
  • Fewer accidents
  • Less scrap & rework
  • Increased job satisfaction

Job Relations (The Role of Coach) – the purpose of the Job Relations (JR) module is to train persons within the organization that train, coach or lead other people in methods to earn the trust, cooperation, and loyalty of others. It is important to remember that effective leaders get results through their people and that good relations mean good production and continuous improvement results. Results obtained from Job Relations (JR) training are:

  • Higher employee retention rates
  • Better morale
  • Improved productivity
  • Improved attendance
  • Foster conditions for continual improvement mentality

Job Methods (The Role of Problem Solver) – the purpose of the Job Methods (JM) module is to train persons within the organization that train, coach or lead other people how to analyze jobs to make the best use of the people, machines and materials available now. Results obtained from Job Methods (JM) training are:

  • Reduced cost
  • Reduced WIP
  • Reduced inventory
  • Increased throughput
